Encircling the lake is a walking path of approximately 3.5 kilometres, making it a favourite spot for both visitors and locals. Early mornings and late afternoons are especially pleasant, offering cool temperatures and beautiful reflections of hills, trees, and historic buildings on the water’s surface.

Despite being in the heart of the city, Kandy Lake supports a surprising variety of wildlife. Visitors often spot water birds, monitor lizards, butterflies, and fish along the lake’s edge. The lake acts as a natural sanctuary, contributing to Kandy’s ecological balance and enhancing its natural appeal.
Kandy Lake offers some of the best panoramic views of the city. From the lakeside, visitors can admire the Temple of the Tooth Relic, colonial-era buildings, forested hills, and the bustling cityscape beyond. Beyond its scenic beauty, Kandy Lake holds deep cultural and spiritual importance. It forms part of the sacred landscape surrounding the Temple of the Tooth Relic and plays a role during major religious events, including the Esala Perahera, when the city comes alive with processions, music, and traditional performances.
Visitors are encouraged to walk clockwise around the lake and respect local customs, especially near religious areas. Swimming and boating are not permitted, as the lake is protected. Comfortable footwear, light clothing, and a camera are recommended to fully enjoy the experience.
