Jaffna is a vibrant city steeped in history, culture, and natural beauty. Known as the cultural capital of the Tamil community, Jaffna is a treasure trove of ancient temples, historical landmarks, and scenic landscapes.
From the impressive Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, one of Sri Lanka’s most significant Hindu temples, to the Jaffna Fort, a relic of the Portuguese and Dutch colonial eras, the city offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past. Jaffna is also renowned for its traditional Tamil cuisine, with an array of flavorsome dishes like Jaffna Crab Curry and mutton briyani, offering an authentic culinary experience for visitors.
Jaffna is located in the northernmost region of Sri Lanka, on the Jaffna Peninsula. It’s surrounded by the Indian Ocean and is approximately 400 km north of Colombo.
Jaffna was the capital of the Jaffna Kingdom that existed from the 13th century until its fall in the 17th century. The kingdom was ruled by the Tamil kings before the Portuguese took control in 1619.
Jaffna is home to many significant temples, including the Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, one of the most important Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, and the Kovil in Nainativu.
The Jaffna Public Library was one of the largest in Asia before it was destroyed in 1981. It has since been rebuilt and remains an important cultural symbol for the Tamil community.
Built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, the Jaffna Fort was later expanded by the Dutch. It remains one of the best-preserved Dutch colonial forts in Sri Lanka.
Jaffna is renowned for its distinct Tamil cuisine, with dishes such as Jaffna Crab Curry, mutton briyani, vadai, and sambol. Jaffna Mangoes are also considered some of the best in Sri Lanka.
